University Center at Harlingen

Texas State Technical College

Reinforced by a design philosophy of “respecting the land, people and history” of the community, ERO Architects created a state-of-the-art, 21st Century educational facility that pays homage to the area's people and history. From the natural light that bathes the interior to sophisticated air quality system that constantly moderates the temperature for optimum comfort, this innovative design helped the University Center at Harlingen become the first and only building south of San Antonio to receive LEED® Gold Certification—meeting the rigorous standards for green buildings.

The building supports both distance learning and on-site teaching so students can earn bachelor, master or doctorate degrees from various state universities without leaving home. The audio and visual technology incorporated into each classroom is state-of-the-art and designed for speed of access. Lecture halls are set up for student comfort and the ability to see and hear their professors and other students no matter where they sit. Remote cameras located throughout are designed to pan to each speaker to capture on screen, in real time, student participation in the discussion without reverberation, distortion or distraction.

A respect of the history and culture of the area is demonstrated in both the interior and exterior of the building. A weave pattern along an exterior wall pays homage to the Coahuiltecans—small Indian tribes that inhabited the region prior to the 1800s. The hard masonry, brick and mortar are softened by an open air trellis at the main entrance. Elegant beams that grace the interior ceilings and a focal wall came from repurposed lumber salvaged from old Army Air Corps barracks that were demolished to make room for the new build.

ERO were selected to provide consulting structural engineering services for this new three story, 180,000 square foot university building. The full roof services contract also included special engineering for roof and floor design to accommodate traveling cranes in the main research laboratory.

The central theme of this project is the central entry mall and LeCorbusier design. The facility had to meet the guidelines of the UT system with a higher educational level of finish. The building consisted of a 10 acre master planned site, faculty offices, 46 general classrooms, one multi-level lecture hall, six special science classrooms, six science laboratories and one student lounge and snack bar.

The science building was developed to a similar size site that of the UTPA Engineering building but is actually almost 50% bigger in size. Includes four full size lecture halls with stadium seating, 12 state-of-the-art science labs, classrooms, faculty and department offices. The building was developed to reduce vibration to negligible levels so not to be picked up on high-power microscopes. The entry lobby was designed using light levels of colored concrete, and the building was tied into the campus wide chiller plant system. The facility had to meet the guidelines of the UT system with a higher educational level of finish.

ERO was selected to provide design services for this new 4 story 60,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility completed in 2004. Challenged by a constrained site ERO developed a facility that attached to the existing building on the west so students could move freely from the existing to new public space. The large windows throughtout the building extol the virtues of daylighting creating a more conducive environment for learning. The building accommodates the new intelligent classroom requirements of the college and had to meet all of the college’s design standards. It also includes a student success center, admin offices, library, offices for faculty and full functional laboratories for various health programs including, medical health technology, pharmaceutical technology and EMS.
