ERO’s design with HDR for the new Hidalgo County Courthouse received the Lower Rio Grande Valley AIA Spark Award for its approach, innovation, aesthetics, and community linkage. Cited were the contributions of the culturally relevant exterior appearance and compatibility with Edinburg's downtown. The building stands at a majestic seven stories with brise soleil shading for the jewel box main lobby and laser-cut metal panels and tiles for decoration. The award recognizes excellence in architectural work and elevated the quality of architecture for unbuilt projects.
The new courthouse features a glazed curtain wall system with porcelain panels. For the safety of maintenance personnel, a roof system with built-in tie-ins and davits was designed. The judges have a covered path from the garage to a separate entrance into the building. A video monitoring system was placed to optimize safety. The design provides modern, collocated, safe, and secure judicial courts alongside associated public defender, indigent defense, adult probation, defendant holding, jury, and law enforcement spaces that comply with state mandates. The new courthouse signifies the community’s commitment to building a healthy and sustainable economy while providing the highest standards for the County’s judicial process. The building's statuesque presence will be a beacon for the courthouse square and the city of Edinburg as a whole.
